City of Gold – Berlin in Flux: Identity, memory, agency
Berlin's urban landscape is a living testament to the intricate interplay between visionary counterculture, and corporate-driven speculative initiatives. City of Gold – Berlin in Flux explores the city's multifaceted history, marked by profound transformations, intriguing collisions of visions, erasures, and possible projections into the future, through a series of collective visits to key sites that have shaped the city’s identity over the decades—as well as mirrored the dominant political-social-economic forces at play. From the late 80s until today (the period this seminar will mostly refer to) Berlin has undergone significant shifts, punctuated by the fall of the Wall on November 9, 1989, occupations of overly available spaces, densification, and—most recently—gentrification and hyper commercialization. This makes it essential to discuss strategies for artistic engagement in a city that seems to be losing its historical marks and very few empty spaces to corporate-driven urban development. more info here: https://www.udk-berlin.de/studium/kunst-und-medien/experimenteller-film-medienkunst/standard-titel-10/

Urban Habitat: artistic field research on living spaces on Oranienstraße - an exhibition project
The Oranienstraße in Berlin Kreuzberg is the starting point for an artistic and cinematic exploration of the theme of living space. The participants of the seminar will research, discover, explore and observe a street and its inhabitants and develop short video works that will be shown in the shop window and interior of SCOTTY, a project space for contemporary art and experimental media at Oranienstraße. The exhibition will be jointly conceived and organized by the participants of the seminar and will take place in January 2024.

Film curator Florian Wüst will be our guest to present and discuss a series of historical films about Kreuzberg. We will visit the FHXB Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum as well as the exhibition "Voicing Bethanien" at Kunstraum Bethanien and explore the open archive "Block 57" about living and working in Kreuzberg curated by artist Sigrun Drapatz. There will be shared walks with short impulse talks by the participants on specific self-selected topics and places on Oranienstraße.

Residual Heat ( Restwärme)
In search of spaces for reflection that allow us to problematize different forms of sensitive approach to the world, this course called Residual Heat invites students of the experimental film and media arts class -among others interested- to collectively think, develop and record visual, verbal or corporeal actions and gestures around the idea of the production and conservation of heat.
Under the winter framework of the WS 23/24 semester, we seek to stimulate a reflective encounter that catalyzes questionings and problematizations related to heat as a metaphor. From its thermal interpretation translated to the affect between bodies, to its tangible connotations under a framework of global energy and ecological crisis, the possibilities detonated by heat as a subject of thermal-affective research open the way to the interpretation of the world from a wide range of action.
The thermal and affective interest of this course suggests the creation of a space for the conception and production of images where, through light, movement, body and language, we will reflect together on the relationship between audiovisual language and its affective translation of the qualities of the environment.
As a practical component of this course, we will experimentally explore cyanotype, a photographic printing technique that uses exposure to sunlight, as a tool to present the visual material that participants will develop during the course, which may include either image sequences or short experimental videos.

Text to Motion - Fiction, Experimental animation, AI?

Meridian Crossing Xentities

Plenary sessions aim to be a temporary habitat open for the confluence of Xentities—ideas, methods, debates, approaches, and possibilities that are yet to come. Participants share their stories in these sessions and evolve their ideas, sketches, and accounts of their current artistic endeavours. Each session is a shared experiment in rethinking and reimagining the meridian that converges our thoughts through techniques of the body, referred to as "Xentities."
In meetings designed to realise individual and group projects, we test generative, interactive and network systems that challenge the boundaries of instrument design, strive to foster transdisciplinary and performative work and unlock transindividual potential.

Embodies the Coder's Space
In "Embodies the Coder's Space," four key dimensions are investigated: Code Space explores the symbiosis between code and coder. It delves into imagining and creating the tactile coding environment that emphasises fluidity across various worlds. Generative Space engages with the philosophical and psychological aspects that tie coding actions to sensorial and spiritual experimentations. Performing Space critically investigates coding as an artistic practice, heightening diversities and modulating the borders between code, culture, body technology and artificial lives. Lastly, Collab Space probes into the micro-political practice inherent in coding, exploring how it is both a personal focus and a societal act of care, connecting psychical and social individuation.
The colloquium will feature workshops and seminars and motivate individual art projects that foster transdisciplinary collaboration for inventive generative outcomes.

The"器” is without why
器Qì“derived from Daoist philosophy. In today's social context, 'Qì' becomes a community of human bodies and machines. It symbolizes both a technological entity and an inherent component of the human form. In the age of the Anthropocene, where technology has ascended as a planetary force influencing every aspect of our lives, intriguing questions arise. How does our body respond when subjected to rapid and profound technological changes? Does the vessel of flesh gradually approach its limits, teetering on the brink of collapse, or does it find itself immersed in euphoria?
In this Block Seminar we will be collaborating with parts of the Butoh Workshop, try how to hack distances, surfaces, bodies, and binaries as X-Self, analyzing, visualizing, and deconstructing power structures, while ensuring that happiness hormones are released even in virtual connections. We will feature game engines and motion capture as primary creative frameworks to shape a new perspective of the cosmos and translate the human bodies into the environment. Through practical work with advanced VFX, lighting, motion tracking and audiovisual interaction, you will gradually integrate the personal aesthetic experience. Discover how to present new progressive communities in the digital realm and combine utopian research on pleasurable interfaces with the playful exploration of digital tools. The final project will be shared through various distribution formats. On the last day of the seminar, you will present your Final Projects/Processes.

Fungal mind of algorithm
In many biological researches we can find that inteligence not necessarily connected with organisms with highly complex neural system. The patterns of intelligent behavior can appear in colony of unicellular organisms, in fungal mycelium and many others organisms without neurons. Such behavior raises up from interactions within ecosystem and form collective inteligence. So inteligence is not necessary a property of highly developed individual agent but rather a feature of multi agent collective.
This semester we will explore the algorithmic approach toward self organized biological processes. We'll appropriate ideas and concepts from Artificial life and try to blend them with deep learning AI systems. Starting with very basic cellular automata or slime simulation we will see how much complex intelligent and sentient system we can build. Nutrients for building such system we will build with Python code.

BUTOH workshop – Meridians 三 Selves
The Intensive Butoh Improvisation Workshop With Yuko Kaseki is a 3-day intensive physical work experience and a generative dialogue with and based on Yuko Kaseki's approach to butoh methods. It takes improvisation performative perspectives, tailored for the Time-Based Art with Contemporary Technology Class, experimenting with the notion of performing the Transindividual Self through the performative bodies, including our physical bodies and its Umwelt, as well as the information systems, machines, and codes.
The workshop strives to provide the students with tools and handcrafts, imagination and pragmatism, spontaneity and planning, structure and chaotic freedom.
_______________________________________
WORKSHOP DETAILS:
One ongoing focus point in this three-day workshop is Following Yuko Kaseki's continuous research with various physical training methods such as Noguchi gymnastics, elements of Tai-Chi Dao-yin, Butoh methodology, and dance improvisation. The workshop starts with finding the core of our body (Tanden) and deep listening to the meridians connected variants of the Inner- and in relation to the Outer. Direct physical attention to other bodies, objects, spaces and data will stimulate and enhance physical imagination, attention and retention and help accumulate a vocabulary of performing the trans individual self with contemporary technology.

Digitale Bildung

Digital Education consists of education-about-digital and education-with-digital.

Combine both approaches, mix it with few weeks of making, add some tradition and a dose of constructivist idealism, spice it with cognitive and computer science and let the synergy of design & theory emerge.

udk.ai / Human and Artificial Intelligence
What is "intelligence" and how is it defined by different people and different cultures ? Is there only one "general" intelligence thanks to which humans and machines solve problems or is it more appropriate to speak about combinations of "multiple intelligences" - emotional, intepersonal, intrapersonal, spatial, visual, logical, mathematical, bodily, moral, narrative, etc. ? Can we speak about intelligence independent of cultural and socio-economical context within which its acts and is embedded ? Do organic (OI) and artificial intelligence (AI) have something in common or are they fundamentally and unreconcilably different ? In order to explore potential answers to these questions, we will look into history of cognitive (psychology, anthropology) and computer  (informatics, cybernetics)  sciences, we will read stories about "idiot savants" and children raised in wilderness and briliant minds of the past in order to ultimately ask our own AI systems to tell them something about themselves.

New Media
We look critically at the emerging trends in digital media and culture. Instead of focusing on specific tools, our ethos is to question the status quo and experiment with possible futures.

Cosmos, Compost &
Once again, the course is about living and creative transformations. We dig deeper into these topics and accelerate the fermentation processes with the help of experts from various fields.
Cosmos, Compost & ... refers to possible questions about the soil and other layers of reality, interwoven through roots and data networks, information prompted by plants using NAI (not-so-artificial intelli- gence). We look at old and new, digital and physical media that form the basis for the growth of new re- alities, presences and futures.

Beginnings and endings are - as in real life - im- portant markers. At the beginning and end of the semester, we go into our inner mineshafts, always with the canary with us, whose lively whistle is an indication that the air is still clear. Un-Greening Green
The entanglement of symbolic, ontological and perfor- mative ‚green’ poses cross-disciplinary challenges beyond its role as a colour in art. The seminar examines ‚green’ from a multi-perspective angle as, paradoxically, the most anthropocentric of all colour concepts with regards to its physical-chemical materiality, biological functionali- ty, perception, semantic construction, ideology, etc., as well as related artistic positions. Beyond positive conno- tations of liveliness and naturalness, the ubiquitous trope of ‚green’ meanders through diverse cultures of knowledge, hyper-compensates metaphorically for the technical manipulation of living systems, while ‚green- washing’‚greenhouse effects’ away.

Fundamentals of 3D animation for the web
In this course we will learn how to produce interactive 3D content for the web. The goal of the course is to give students the tools to create
a video game or 3D animation that runs in the browser, can be self-hosted without the need for a social media platform, and can be shared with a link. We will only use open source tools such as Three.js and Blender.
The course is aimed at beginners, but some fami- liarity with variables, loops and arrays is recom- mended.

Fifty Shades Of Gay
Disrupting normative desires and sexualities

The seminar focuses on artistic forms which explore the definitions and representations of fetishes as a tool of disrupting binary sexualities, identities and normative desires while negotiating queerness as a spectrum.
After a theoretical input and watching/analysing films of the so-called „New Queer Cinema“ and „Post-Porn“ together, the participants develop their own art work which takes a kink or fetish of choice as a starting point. The developed works will be shown in an art space in Berlin at the end of the semester (tba.).

Geste, Gestaltung, und Gestimmtheit - physical metaphysics for artists
The purpose of this seminar for artists is to become a phenomenon of theory. In other words, it is not about the artist serving as a translator to convert what was traced in the book into a work, but rather about the artist becoming a phenomenon already translated and embodied – producing results that even Flusser could not have anticipated.
